Korea grows by one more Seoul

My work week had been crazy so I don’t have much time (to do everything that I want to). But this is interesting!

Within 9 years (2004 – 2013), Korea adds another Seoul to its land territories. To take things into perspective, Seoul is about 605 km sq and Singapore is comparative, at about 710km sq.

Typically, land gets added along the shoreline. For Korea, the area of land covered by roads increased while areas covered by farmland and forested land decreased, resulting in this overall land increase.

Did some brief search – Singapore reclaimed land from hills, seabed and neighbouring countries. We used to be 581 km sq (1960s) and might grow by another 100 km sq by 2033.
